Brothers of Charity

The Congregation of the Brothers of Charity began in Belgium in 1807 by Canon Peter Joseph Triest with the aim of helping those most in need and most excluded by the wider community. This continues to be the guiding principle in our work in more than twenty countries around the world. In the United Kingdom we have been providing services since the end of the nineteenth century and now focus primarily on supporting adults with learning disabilities.

We are committed to working with all people of good will to build communities which respect the dignity and value of each individual. We respond to the needs of each person as an individual with unique abilities and skills to offer the world. Through careful assessment and through consultation with the service users themselves, with their families, their carers and others we build up a particular place for each person, designed for them to reach their full potential. Amongst other things, the service addresses the care and training needs of all individuals.

Across our three services in the UK we provide high quality, locally based residential and community support services. We aim to provide opportunities for people with learning disabilities to contribute to the community in which they live.

We provide residential and day facilities for over 660 people on either a full time or sessional basis. Throughout the UK we employ a staff of 964 reflecting the very high standard of one to one care and support we offer to each individual.

The last ten years or more have seen our three UK services developing and improving their diverse range of activities as we move away from traditional models of care in large-scale residential settings to independent living carefully supported and managed. We are now in a period of consolidation, learning through co-operation with the service users the best way to further develop our work. As we have always endeavoured to do, we will continue to integrate the best of current practice into our services as we develop strong and caring relationships with our users.
